The Nots First
TNFirst is a collective endeavour to empower the excluded individuals and communities. It strives to ensure that those kept behind – the have nots – attain the SDGs first, and are above the mean in all human development indicators.
It is the human rights version of the Indian concept of ‘Antyodaya’, to ensure that the vulnerable individuals, families, and communities become more resilient in an increasingly unstable world, where natural and manmade disasters are the norm.
TNFirst proactively seeks out the stigmatised and invisibilised individuals and sections of society to actively ensure their inclusion in the development process and in society.
The approach has several components, each of which focus on a specific set deprivations and together cover the entire gamut of human well-being.

Single Women’s Action Network (SWAN)
‘Single women’ is a patriarchal concept that imagines women as incomplete without a man. This is a phallocratic fallacy since, as Steinem artfully put it, a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle. ‘Single’ women are strong, self-reliant, working women, bringing up several children to become professionals while being the primary caregiver to her parents and siblings, and often her in-laws as well. SWAN is a network of strong women in Tamil Nadu to celebrate life and change social perceptions.
